Kharlo, a magnificent bay gelding, entered my life in May 1998 when I purchased him as a 4-year-old from a dealer in Shropshire. Standing at 15.3hh initially, he matured to a majestic 16.1hh by the age of 8. Kharlo's journey was not without its challenges; his wayward attitude demanded two years of rigorous schooling and discipline. However, our perseverance paid off, and Kharlo went on to achieve remarkable success in the world of equestrian competitions.
Our journey together was filled with memorable moments and achievements, including our notable highlights:
In August 2002, at the National Side Saddle Championships in Keysoe, Bedfordshire, Kharlo secured a 5th place in the Adult Novice Equitation and Large Riding Club Horse categories. The following year, at the same event held at Addington Manor in Bucks, he claimed 1st place in Adult Novice Dressage and Adult Costume Concours d'Elegance, as well as 4th place in Adult Intermediate Equitation.
The year 2004 brought more triumphs, with Kharlo securing 1st place in Adult Intermediate Equitation and 10th place in National Side Saddle Performance Points at the National Side Saddle Championships in Addington Manor, Bucks.
Kharlo's success continued in subsequent years, with victories at prestigious events such as the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells and various local shows. He consistently impressed judges with his elegance and skill in disciplines like Equitation, Concours d'Elegance, and Dressage.
In 2010, after a brief hiatus from competing due to rising costs, Kharlo made a remarkable comeback. Overcoming arthritis in his front feet and nearside hock, he defied the odds with corrective treatment and farriery. This marked a new chapter in his show career, as he secured several impressive wins, including 1st place in Pre-Veteran Ridden at the Wayland Agricultural Show in Watton, Norfolk, and 1st place in Pre-Veteran Horse/Pony at the National Side Saddle Championships.
Tragically, in June 2013, Kharlo passed away from atypical myopathy, leaving a void in my heart that could never be filled. Throughout his remarkable journey, he brought joy and triumph, leaving an indelible mark in the world of showmanship.
Kharlo's legacy extends beyond his personal achievements. While retired from competition, he continued to inspire and coach other riders, sharing his wisdom and experiences. Together, we conducted demonstrations at local yards, promoting the art of side saddle riding and nurturing a love for the equestrian world.
Kharlo was not just a show horse; he was a true companion, an exceptional athlete, and a symbol of determination. His spirit and legacy will forever remain in our hearts, reminding us of the extraordinary bond between horse and rider. Though he may no longer be with us, his remarkable journey will continue to inspire future generations of equestrians. Rest in peace, dear Kharlo.
